You've probably all seen this Emerson video, but I thought that I'd post it here anyway.
Tarkus is such an AWESOME piece of music. It even sounds fantastic played as a "solo piece" on the piano, doesn't it? (from the YouTube website): KEITH EMERSON & THE ALIENS OF EXTRAORDINARY ABILITY-VENICE BEACH, CALIFORNIA July 7, 1996. PIANO TARKUS: (ERUPTION STONES OF YEARS ICONOCLAST) Gary

Great stuff... But one thing strikes me. Keith has SO sped up that tarkus riff over the years. For me it's almost TOO fast in this. (OK... shoot me now!) Still brilliant though

Yeah, he is really flying on this version.... LOL ;D
I image Keith has performed that famous 5/4 ostinato bass pattern so many times over and over again... that he's now able to rip through it at supersonic speed, without even thinking about it.
And, in a way, I agree with you about speeding up the riff. It kinda seems to run together, and the notes are almost indistinguishable.
Personally, the speed I prefer (which is still quite faster than the original version on the Tarkus album)... is the "Live" version on Welcome Back my Friends to the Show that Never Ends.
To me, that tempo is just about perfect. That's especially true of "Eruption" with it's driving and ever-changing rhythm patterns and hard-hitting accents. It sounds so incredibly good to me at that speed, that I've started listening to the "live" version even more than the original "studio" version.
